Hypermedia, multimedia and database technologies are powerful tools that facilitate information access and management. In this paper we examine the role of database systems in managing multimedia data. Database systems need to do more than providing a document model or binary large objects to implement multimedia database systems. They need to incorporate the role of media servers which are extensions of traditional file servers with isochronous multimedia data delivery capabilities. To support this we propose a novel temporal query script methodology to provide the database system with information about future requests. The database system can use this information to optimize the retrieval and delivery of multimedia streams.
